I have always been curious and wonder how some people can be so successful. As such, I did some research on what are the traits of successful people.
It was quite a fruitful experience as I have learnt a lot while doing the research.
Do continue to read on if you want to know more about how successful people think and act.
Successful People Know What They Want – Not Merely Know, But Know Clearly.
Successful people always know what they want very clearly.
This is because they are aware that in order to take any action(s) or even start planning, they have to know exactly what they need to do in detail for them to achieve their ultimate goal(s).
This clear understanding of knowing what they want provides two benefits.
Firstly, it provides a sense of direction for them to not only start, but also to persevere in acting towards their goals.
Secondly and most importantly, knowing clearly what they want allows them to also know clearly what knowledge and skills are required for them to achieve their goals. They will then start to acquire these much needed skills.
They Are Not Afraid And Believe They Are In Control.
After knowing exactly what is needed to take the relevant steps to achieve their goals, it doesn’t take long for them to get into action.
For many of us, we might have some level of fear – fear of embarking into something new or fear of failure.
Due to this fear, many of us might be stuck at this juncture and either do not move on from here or take a long time to move on and take the first steps.
Successful people however, even if they do experience fear, do not allow themselves to fear for too long.
They do not spend much time hesitating. Instead, they hop into the relevant actions to achieve their goals as soon as they can.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill
They also believe that they are in control of their own success and failure.
They believe that they are not only responsible for their every action but inaction as well, and this is why they tend not to sit on tasks for too long.
They Are Constantly Moving and Learning.
After knowing their goals clearly, they waste no time thinking of what is needed for them to take actionable steps.
They quickly identify what skills they already have and what skills they will need to acquire for their next action(s).
Most importantly, they recognize the fact that they are not well-versed in everything.
They do not hide the fact that they are not knowledgeable in certain areas and are always keen to learn.
They usually have a mentor. This mentor might and might not be a coach whom they pay in order to acquire the necessary knowledge.
Mentors can also come in the form of close friends or acquaintances who know more about the required skill than themselves.
At this point, they are usually preoccupied with either gaining the necessary skill or busy performing the steps which will lead them to their final goal.
They will be too busy to think about their fear of not being able to succeed.
“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” – Henry David Thoreau
They Are Adaptable And Keep Up With Times
Successful people are learning constantly which also allows them to keep abreast of the latest trends.
They know that knowing the latest developments is important in any business as the environmental elements relating to any business(es) do not stay the same.
In fact, these elements are constantly changing.
Successful people recognize these changes and adjust their business according to the trend, ensuring that both their business, as well as their knowledge and skills are always up to date.
In this way, they will always be able to stay on top of competition.
For instance, at one time, VCDs were very popular. Almost everyone owns them.
However, as technology advances, VCDs became obsolete when people opted for DVDs which are much higher in resolution.
If companies did not recognize this change in trend and were still manufacturing or dealing with VCDs, they will soon start to lose market share and eventually, be pushed out of competition.
Hence, having clear knowledge of the shifting market trends as well as latest technological advances is crucial to the survival of every business,
They Know How To Make Good Use Of Their Time
Successful people have effective time management skill.
They are fully aware that they have limited time every day and will make full use of whatever time they have.
They refer to their calendar daily so they know very very well the amount of available time they have everyday for their tasks.
They recognize that time is wealth and will make careful choices to focus on tasks which are urgent and important instead of focusing on those tasks which are merely easier or require shorter time to tackle.
This is because they know that every time they focus on something which is not so important, they will end up having less time to handle tasks which are much more important.
They procrastinate very little as they know that they will have to eventually pay the cost of not getting things done.
On a regular basis, they reflect on their days to see what was done and not done.
This also enables them to have a clear idea of what they should do next.
They Learn From Mistakes and Will Never Make The Same Mistakes Again.
Successful people are not saints. They do make mistakes along their journey too.
What makes them different from the others is that they do not beat themselves hard when they make mistakes as they strongly believe that they can learn a lot from it.
So whenever a mistake is made, they will make it a point to look at what went wrong in detail.
Asking themselves what or how they will do differently is part of the process which they use to learn from their mistakes.
Most importantly, they remember their mistake(s) and will always make sure not to repeat the same mistake(s) again.
Other than learning from their own mistakes, they also learn from the mistakes made by other people.
They believe learning is a continuous process and will constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills both personally and professionally.
They Believe In Win-Win Situation For Everyone – At Least As Much As They Can.
People who are successful in the long-run know the importance of trying to make more friends than enemies.
This is because they strongly believe that there might be times when they need help from others and when it happens, it will be disadvantageous to them if they are on bad terms with the party whom they need to get help from.
This applies the same to their competitors. They tend to treat their competitors not like arch-enemies but instead, always try to make an effort to achieve a situation where everyone can benefit.
They understand the fact that being in the business is all about people. Therefore, they will always try to maintain good relationships with everyone.
